STUDIO TALK

Mac James

A man hugging a white horse on a grassy hillside with a rural landscape and mountains in the background.

In this conversation, Mac James shares the story behind MianU’s artwork, revealing how he and Regina worked together to transform Ian’s sketches into distinctive brushstrokes and thoughtful design elements. Mac has lived on Kaua’i since 2004, creating drawings and paintings inspired by the island’s shifting light and natural rhythms. Raised on Florida’s Gulf Coast, he studied graphic design before working as a freelance artist in Hollywood and later dedicating himself to fine art, living and exhibiting in Los Angeles and New York before settling into his creative home on Kaua’i.

Can you share the story behind how you developed the artwork for MianU?

MJ: The evolution of MianU’s art was born between Ian and his mom, Regina King. It showcases the power and unity of art, supporting the global work and voices of artists in every way possible. The wine encapsulates the vision of their bond.

Based on drawings made by Ian, Regina and I worked in dialogue to interpret and complete his vision.

Are there any elements of the logo or artwork that you are fond of?

MJ: I am fond of the imperfect flower blossom lan drew, suggesting that imperfection is unique and good. The logo has a musical flow, designed by Ian in calligraphy with music in mind. The brushstrokes are as unique as fingerprints.

Where do you draw inspiration from? Do you find a spark in nature and your surroundings?

MJ: I have been drawing and painting for fifty years with the single and all-consuming muse of Nature. I am astounded by the possibilities to present the gifts of life and the support the Earth provides us all and could not exist without.

How do you know when a piece is finished or when to stop adding?

MJ: My inner voice tells me so.

Have you encountered anything lately that energized your creative spirit?

MJ: I live on a small island, Kaua‘i, in the most remote spot on Earth, Hawaii.

Endlessly transfixed, overwhelmed, and humbled at every moment, my creative spirit is always in overdrive and in dialogue with what to make next.

What is it about creativity or art brings people together?

MJ: The sheer magnitude of past and present self-expression, diversity, and insight that is a gift to all.
